PILGRIMAGE TO ATHOS

1 DAY
Mount Athos is an amazing monastic land where unceasing prayer is offered for the whole world.

Mount Athos is a special place, halfway between heaven and earth. For the last 1,300 years Mount Athos has occupied a special position among other countries: it is not subject to the secular laws.

The Holy Mountain is under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, and is part of the Greek state with a special status, where Greek is the official language. At present there are 20 functioning monasteries on Athos, which have status of Patriarchy (17 Greek, 1 Russian, 1 Bulgarian, and 1 Serbian).

Apart from the monasteries there are 12 hermitages, various cells, kathismes, and isikhastories. There are altogether about 2000 monks on Mount Athos, including hermitages and hermitages. The programme of the trip to Athos includes visits to 4 monasteries and one hermitage.

program

Ouranoupolis
From Ouranoupolis the pilgrims will take the boat (08:45) to the Xenophontos Monastery, where the pilgrimage begins. In the monastery, founded in 9th century, the monks keep two miracle worker icons: of Our Lady "Odigitrii" and St. George, who miraculously finds his iconography in the monastery.
Karyes
After that we move to the capital of the monastic state of Karyes, where the main sacred place of Athos is the icon "Dignified Is" and the oldest Athonian temple, founded in the 9th century and consecrated in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin ("Protat")
Iverskiy monastery
Then the pilgrims will move to the Iverskiy monastery, where the miracle-working Iversk Icon of the Mother of God is kept
Pandokrator Monastery
Next we will visit the Pandokrator Monastery, founded in the 14th century, on a cliff 50m above sea level. Among relics that we can venerate there are the icon of the Mother Goddess Gerontissa (the patroness of the monastery), one of the most worshiped miracle worker icons, a piece of the Life-giving Cross, a part of the Heaton of the Lord (the relics are not found anywhere else on Athos), the relics of the holy Hands of Cosmas and Damian and the Great Martyr Theodore Stratilat. The iconostasis of the monastery is probably the oldest on Athos.
Vatopede Monastery
Our next stop will be in Vatopede Monastery where 7 miracle icons are kept. One of them is the icon of Our Lady of Sorrows with whom we heal a lot of people from oncological diseases. The favourite icon of St Dmitriy of Rostov, "Joy and Comfort", is also kept here. The main relics of the monastery are the honest belt of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the holy head of St John Chrysostom.
Russian St. Panteleimon Monastery
The final destination will be the Russian St. Panteleimon Monastery, where the head of the Great Martyr Panteleimon the Healer resides. We depart by chartered boat from Xenophon Monastery.
Note
Pilgrims are accompanied by orthodox Russian-speaking guide, on Athos they travel by off-road car.

The program ends at about 6 p.m. in Ouranoupolis.
